The Corpus Callosum is a large bundle of more than 200 million myelinated nerve fibers that connect the two brain hemispheres, permitting communication between the right and left sides of the brain. In this series of paintings two worlds collide. Gispert deconstructs symbols and imagery from urban hip hop culture. The dissected signs and symbols are further examined as they are reinterpreted through modernist painting tropes. The high cultural references of oil painting are complicated by the introduction of stories and objects from another social class. A pushing and pulling of meaning allows the viewer to complete the meaning of the paintings.
“Mere critical thinking, without creative and intuitive insights, without the search for new patterns, is sterile and doomed. To solve complex problems in changing circumstances requires the activity of both cerebral hemispheres: the path to the future lies through the corpus callosum”.
— Carl Sagan
