ANDREW SUTHERLAND

Though Andrew Sutherland studied multimedia art, he considers himself largely self-taught in his practice that encompasses sculpture, installation, performance, and public interventions he referred to as “sculptural graffiti.” For Sutherland, “the common thread is my selection and use of materials,” which includes manufactured products like cardboard, vinyl, fiberboard, plastics, and commercial catalogues or leaflets. Sutherland’s work is also united by a sensitivity for texture and pattern. In some of his best known series, Sutherland cut into the surface of stacked paper or corrugated cardboard such that they appeared to have a wood grain, making reference to returning the materials to their natural state. More recently, he has been developing an inlay technique to create images of open boxes. Sutherland has expressed regret that the labor intensity of his craft limits his production.
